decorex, 2023

On the 10th of October, we had the pleasure of attending our first-ever Decorex International event, which was hosted at the beautiful Olympia London, a historical exhibition and conference centre, located in the Kensington district of London.

Olympia boasts a storied past dating back to the late 19th century and has been an important venue for a diverse array of cultural, entertainment, and trade gatherings. Many of its original architectural details are still preserved.

During our visit, we had the amazing opportunity to engage with many of the exhibitors and suppliers. However, our primary focus was on the captivating array of art, craft and handmade exhibits presented by the talented artisans participating in the event.

Aimee Betts
One standout discovery was the work of Aimee Betts, whose creations delve into the fascinating intersections between traditional knotting, braiding, and hand-embroidery techniques, resulting in innovative and contemporary designs. Aimee's work draws deep inspiration from historical textiles, drawing from the rich tapestry of textiles and leather craftsmanship found in museums, galleries, and various literature, ranging from sailor's knots to the art of embroidery.

Otzi
On the subject of leather craftsmanship, it is impossible not to mention the exquisite offerings from Otzi - a studio dedicated to sourcing the finest leathers and materials, utilising a blend of traditional and modern techniques in their creations. Their choice of predominantly vegetable-tanned leathers from the UK, Italy, or Spain, along with responsibly sourced timber, stems from a belief in the intrinsic value and distinctive characteristics of natural and sustainable materials, which synthetic alternatives cannot replicate. Otzi adheres to craft techniques wherever feasible, as they provide a distinct human touch and yield exceptional results.

Jan Waterston and J. Adams & Co
The presence of several exhibitors from our beloved hometown of Birmingham at Decorex International was a delightful surprise that added a special layer of meaning to our visit. Among these notable local representatives were J. Adams & Co and Jan Waterston. This discovery reinforced our unwavering commitment to championing our local community's talent and craftsmanship. We firmly uphold our pledge to collaborate with local tradespeople and artisans whenever the opportunity arises, recognising the invaluable contributions they make to our community.

Corston Architectural Detail

Corston Architectural Detail, another exhibitor at the event, made a significant impact on us. This wasn't our first encounter with their work; we had the privilege of incorporating their products into our Umberslade project. The lasting impression they left was a testament to the remarkable quality and precision that goes into crafting their exceptional lights and hardware.

Ukrainian Product Design

Last, but certainly not least, one of the most captivating highlights of our visit was the mesmerising exhibit by Ukrainian product design. Their collection presented an inspiring blend of diversity, creativity, and meticulous precision in each and every item. The attention to detail and craftsmanship showcased by the craftspeople under Ukrainian Product Design’s umbrella was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving us with a deep appreciation for their dedication to their craft. This exhibit served as a reminder of the global reach of art and design, transcending borders, and cultures to inspire and connect creative minds from around the world.
